Jan 27 Meeting and Program

Our January meeting will be held on the 27th, at the Alaska Mining Hall of Fame Museum. We being our meeting at 6 where we discuss what we are working on and genealogy in general. At 7pm, the program begins. This month, the title is “The Interior Alaska Passengers of the Princess Sophia Shipwreck”. The tragedy happened on Oct 25, 1918 near Juneau, Alaska.

We will have a slide show and discussion of the 100+ people onboard who were from interior Alaska. We will talk about some of them in detail, who they were, what they were doing in Alaska, and how their deaths affected their families. Some of the genealogical research was very difficult, and we will also share how we found records.

Bodies were stored in boxes until they were cleaned and identified.
Divers had the gruesome task of retrieving bodies.
