Gordon & Marilyn Herreid will be inducted into the Alaska Mining Hall of FameGordon Weed Herreid was a dreamer who climbed Alaska’s tallest peak, mapped its geology, helped mine its mineral wealth, encouraged the arts, worked at the Food Bank, and farmed its lands. Growing up in California, he served in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division during WW II, where he was wounded. He was the first man to climb both the two tallest peaks on this continent (Denali & Logan).During the 1950’s, he worked as a consulting geologist in Canada & Alaska, where – in 1958 – he was appointed chief geologist of the Red Devil mine in SW Alaska. In 1961, he became Alaska’s first State Geologist, helping to design and implement programs that have enabled the 49th State to acquire knowledge of its mineral resource endowment.
Marilyn Hahn Herreid, Gordon’s wife of 51 years, played a pivotal role in his life: they were inseparable and his successes in life had a lot to do with her behind-the-scenes guidance. Following his retirement from economic geology in 1974, they created Pearl Creek Farm in Fairbanks, a pick-your-own berry and produce enterprise. And, in 1978, with two other couples, Gordon & Marilyn formed the Tanana Valley Farmer’ Market, that is active to this day.
The Induction Ceremony will also be broadcast via Zoom. If you wish to attend by Zoom, provide your email address to Tom or Amy before 6:45pm.
